Persuasive Writing

The 6th grade were given the task of convincing me to add one of their chosen subjects to our school curriculum. The students were told  they could choose any activity they wanted, and to use all of their persuasive language to help me see their point of view.

Parent Newsletter

Hello 6th grade parents,

Welcome to another Blog Update. The quarter so far has seen the students take part in some interesting lessons and further develop their skills across the curriculum. Here is a brief rundown on what has been going on in the educational life of the 6th grade.

In English the students have been working hard to convince and persuade their audiences on a range of topics. While in the process, they have been developing their persuasive writing skills. Recently they have been using their most persuasive techniques to convince me to include their subject of choice in the school’s curriculum. We have had a wide variety of subject choices, ranging from cooking to base-jumping, helicopter building to self-defence.  It is clear to see that these students really know how to put up a convincing argument when they want something.

Our math lessons have seen the students continue to develop their skills and ability to solve problems involving fractions. It has been nice to see the overall improvement and understanding of the students as the year has progressed. There have been many ‘light-bulb’ moments for the students, which makes life as a teacher very rewarding and worthwhile. Hopefully these improvements continue to occur as the efforts inside and outside of the classroom take fruition.

Our Humanities/Science topic so far has seen the students learn about the formation and location of Switzerland’s mountains. Students have been asked to use the internet, online books, handouts, plus their prior knowledge to locate and record information regarding this topic. As this topic continues, we will take a look at the Rhine and the influence this river has played in Switzerland over time and continuing into the future.

Over the upcoming weeks the students will remain busy as they continue with their learning and also begin to prepare for the festive season. As usual, there will be Christmas singing this year, so there will be lots of practise and preparation involved in that.  We will also be decorating our floor of the building by taking part in a hands-on workshop mixing the 5th and 6th grades.

So, this has been our quarter so far, please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss anything regarding your child’s education as we move forward together.

Thank you for your ongoing support at home and best wishes over the upcoming weeks. See you all at Christmas singing.

Kind regards
James Allen and Nina Franke.

Day 4

Donnerstag

Camp- Day 3

Today we went toBKW ( Francesco´s fathers firma) to look at the wind park and the soalr zellen park. The teachers brought us there with the buses and also the car to the Canton Bern. Once there we ate our picnic and played for a bit. After mid-day the teachers put us in two groups with the two different leaders of the tour. We started the tour by seeing the wind park. In the wind park we to go inside one of the wind turbines- it was the 2nd biggest in their park and was 83m high ( I think ). We stayed on the ground floor but could see up the middle of it. To get to the top you had to go up a ladder with the safety equipment on, or in a "lift" that actually looked like a small cage. Even if you go in the lift you must still wear the safety equipment. At the bottom where we stood, there was a monitor showing how many Kilowatts were being produced and also how many time the propeller rotated in a minute.

The solar zellen was installed in 1991. They installed two different types of solarzellen. The newer model they have installed produces more electricity than the older ones.

In the end we had a surprise. We got to ride in a a carriage pulled by horses while we  drank ice tea and ate waffles. Leonardo ate 5.

Did you know: The whole solarzellen park produces 1/3 less electricity than the turbines in the wind park.

Camp-Day 2

Today we went on our big hike. We set off to see the Creux du Van and to complete a 4 hour hike. The Creux du Van was amazing. It was really high and we were able to walk right along the edge of the cliff, luckily nobody fell. Once we had walked along the top and around to the other side, we stopped for a quick lunch and as we ate we were all trying to shelter from the howling wind. The walk down the side of the mountain after lunch was lots of fun but also quite difficult.  Once we hit the bottom we had another long walk through the forest. When this was finished we got picked up and taken back to camp. After another great dinner we spent the night having fun competing in a quiz trying to win points for our room groups.
Today was another long but fun day.

Camp- Day 1

Today we took the train to Neuchatel and then on to Bevaix which is where got off. From there we had to walk an hour to camp. Luckily, our luggage was picked up by a friendly bus driver. If we would have had our luggage then I am sure that most of the children would have dropped dead. When we finally arrived we found out who our room-mates would be. I think most of us were quite happy with them. About 20 minutes later we were done with our rooms and were eating a delicious  healthy lunch. After some time we were all ready to go and visit the cave. As we got there we met our friendly guide who showed us through the cave and told us some interesting facts on the way. As we got close to the end of our tour we saw an amazing sight, it was a huge rock with big lights behind it. It reminded me of a king in the spotlight. Whe we got home we went straight to dinner. The dinner was delicious. There was meat, potatos and vegetables. Soon after we all enjoyed a lovely fruit salad and dessert. YUMM. Now it was time to enjoy a lovely warm shower. What a long fun day.

Quartalsbrief

Liebe Eltern,

The Cobra's and their 2nd Grade 'Mates'

The Cobra's met with their new 2nd grade 'Mates' for the first time today. The students from both grades really enjoyed their first official get together and it was a great success.

The meeting of 'Mates' between the 2 grades is something that will continue throughout the year with the intention of fostering close relationships throughout our school community. The partnerships that were formed today will remain for the entire year.

It was clear today that the 6th graders will be positive influences for the 2nd graders and will assit them in their learning, while the 2nd graders will be a captive live audience for the 6th graders to present their writing and reading to throughout the year.

Hopefully with these new relationships formed, the school playground will feel like a welcoming place for all children, and if a child is feeling lonely or upset they now have an extra friend they can turn to.

A big congratulations goes to the 2nd and 6th graders for doing such a great job!!
